She is of Egyptian, Syrian and Lebanese ethnicity; born in Egypt and raised in Montreal from the age of seven.

Karen Jonze goes one on one and disusses Acting, Montreal and what it takes to succeed.

What made you decide to become an actress?

Ever since I was a little girl, I was always drawn to actors in movies. I often felt the need to play roles, but was never really sure as to why. Perhaps it’s the thought of being in someone else’s shoes without having to face any consequences. Or maybe it’s the “idea” of being in a tale where I know what is going to happen next. We don’t usually know what life has in store for us but as an actor it's inevitable.

What do you love the most about Montreal?

There's no doubt that what makes Montreal so special and one of a kind is it's diversity and multi-ethnicity, not to mention that its residents have a superior quality of life. There is so much culture, the people are very welcoming and if you talk to them they will help you see that. Another major bonus is that this fun loving city has some very interesting architectural designs & historical venues. The truth is, you can’t help but to fall in love with Montreal. Montreal is definitely a place to discover.

What is your opinion on Montreal music?

I love the Montreal music scene. We have the most recognized music festival in the world. Many artist have found their big break at The Montreal Jazz Festival. A lot of talented montreal artists are making it into the mainstream, such as Carl Wolf , Massari, Slaves on Dope and many more... You walk around Montreal and you can hear any music you want, and this healthy mixture of local business and music is what has spurred on this amazing scene.

Why do you think that the number of Montrealers who actually reach some degree of success is quite limited?

Yes, there are certainly higher business opportunities in Toronto and Vancouver compared to Montreal. Both anglophone cities are a lot more (american) show business oriented. Although Montreal is a beautiful city and does have opportunities, (divided between french opportunities & english opportunities) it does not compare to Ontario and British Columbia. However one can most definitely find their niche and still succeed in Montreal.

Q. What's your advice for anyone wanting to take their career out of Montreal?

A. Do your homework & be as mentally ready as possible. Remember that venturing out of Montreal will not be easy but being well prepared will ease the process and ultimately deliver better results.
